Time management is probably one of the factors that
distinguishes successful students from those that not so successful. All of us
have the same 24 hours a day. There are some that always complain about there being
no time and the heavy work that needs to be completed within that time. At the
same time there are some among us that manage to complete their work on time
and even find time to relax and have fun. The key lies in finding out the
difference between how these two groups manage their time. In all possibility
you will find that those who are more successful know how to manage their time
efficiently. College students especially need to know how to manage their time
because once the habit is formed; it will help them not only in their academic
years but will also be helpful in their career and life in general.
The first thing that needs to be done is to form an
inventory of the time that is available. People often wake up at different
times and go to sleep at different times. It is obviously the time in between
that can be used to perform tasks. Once this inventory is identified it becomes
easy to plan the work accordingly. Students must start to use calendars. This
can be used to schedule your activities according to the time and day of the
week. Deadlines can be marked and a daily glance at the calendar will enable
you to know where you stand with regards to progress in tasks. The calendar can
be used to list the exact due dates for projects, assignments, research papers
and tasks in general. Miscellaneous side jobs that some students take up to
support themselves during the course of their education must also be included
in this calendar. Time for relaxation must also ne included because too much
work can stress you out.
You should also be able to allocate a particular time span
for every subject. You must not go overboard and give more importance to a
particular subject. If you have any problem with a particular subject make sure
you get help from your tutors or friends. You could use an alarm clock so that
when it rings you can go to another subject. Make sure that your study area is
free of distractions. Switch off your mobile phones and let your family and
friends know beforehand that it is your study time. One of the things that disrupt
your time management is the propensity to procrastinate. If you do so then you
will lose control of your time. You will have to write assignments in a hurry
and in all probability your assignments will not be of a good quality. So plan
your work and stick to the schedule. Finally, and most importantly do not
ignore your health. Studying well should not affect your health. Eat healthy
and get enough sleep. Following these steps will ensure that you will have
enough time for education as well as recreation.
